3D Printing

Sampler of Various Projects

Designing across different disciplines has given me opportunities to use a wide array of 3D printing technologies, from staples such as FDM, SLA and SLS, to even more exotic and cutting-edge media.

I have operated and maintained machines in all these formats, and do not shy away from hacking and building my printers according to project needs.

Associated hardware/software:

Prusa, Voron, Makerbot, Openbuilds, Ender, ZCorp, Formlabs, BTT

OctoPrint, Klipper, Fluidd, Mainsail, Prusa Slicer, Super Slicer, Cura, Preform, MeshLab, Rhino, Grasshopper, Solidworks, Fusion360

Experimental Printing

In my work with Hussein Chalayan’s studio and my own thesis, I experimented with cutting-edge hybrid printing on mixed textile media. Accomplishing this involved hacking existing 3D printers and writing custom scripts for Klipper, a 3D printing firmware.

In other Self-Assembly Lab projects for notable automobile and footwear companies, I worked with Rapid Liquid Printing to develop compliant models for prototypes. This required in-depth learning about novel liquid printing, modeling work with advanced SubD geometries, and analysis with Grasshopper/C++ scripting for compliance.

Architecture and Design Model Printing

Developing and fabricating high fidelity models for architecture and design is my bread and butter. In past positions and my own work, I regularly use FDM, SLA and SLS 3D printers to create models of various scales and resolutions.

3D Printer and CNC Design-Build

Not content with the format or contraints of existing printing systems, I have taken to designing and building my own printers in service of project goals. An example of this is the BBP which allowed me to make the 2.5D Poncho.

Functional Design and Print

For a Self-Assembly Lab project for a major footwear company, I designed and printed a flexible last with stereolithography (SLA) for use with a UR robot. For rapid prototyping of shoe patterns, I experimented with large nozzle FDM printing to reliably print shoe lasts in just over an hour.
